Lately xenophobia has been a major crisis in South Africa. With the large amount of people in arriving from neighboring countries there has been abundance of violence and terror due to these foreigners filling up the employment sector. The press and media have been reporting the story to the public and in my opinion have dehumanized these people and in a way have encouraged the detachment of their basic human rights and dignity.
In many newspaper articles that I have read, I have noticed that the media has labeled these foreigners as aliens. Personally I believe the name is rather derogative and tends to perpetuate certain stereotypes. In my opinion headlines such as “alien terror’ and “war on aliens” is inappropriate and it has had an effect of supporting the recent violence outbreaks we have witnessed on the news.
This has been a major infringement on many peoples human dignity. What has our South Africa come to when they treat their brothers and sisters like something inhuman and “Alien”?
